Sometimes we know what we need, but we just don’t know why. That was the case for Sarah, a 17-year-old that we recently met at E3 Discovery.
Before we shared her Kolbe results with her, we asked her to complete a small exercise and list things that caused her stress and things that created good feelings. She wrote…
Stress: being told last-minute things and not being told what the agenda is
Good feelings: getting outside and getting to do things
Guess what her Kolbe results are? Yep, an 8 in Follow Thru and a 7 in Implementor. Her need for planning and order is extremely important, and it is imperative that she is able to get outside and have physical things to do.
When someone is doing something against their “grain” (their MO) it creates conative stress. Sarah’s feelings were exactly right! She experiences conative stress when she’s given last-minute tasks, and she is able to enter her performance zone when she is allowed to learn hands-on. And, now that she understands the reasons behind those feelings, she has the tools and the language to advocate for herself when faced with a stressful situation.
We all have unique instincts that drive us to action and shape our reactions to life. Whether your child:
– needs help understanding the why
– has problems channeling their instincts productively
– or can’t articulate their feelings at all…
…we are here to help. So many people will go through their entire life without hearing this important truth: Your way of doing is the right way! You are perfect just the way you are.
